This is where we begin…Acequias 

Acequias is a quiet village on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. You can walk from Acequias up the Rio Torrente straight into the Sierra Nevada National Park, past the villages of Nigüelas and the Seven Waterfalls en camino. Nigüelas is a larger village than Acequias and we often walk over there for a drink or to see live music. Nigüelas is famous for its fiesta and markets – cultural as well as traditional – which take place all through the year. Nigüelas has a historic olive mill and museum, in Acequias the olive mill is a summer bar!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Casa Tia Maria which dates back from at least the fifteenth century and was used, in the nineteenth century, by a Spanish aristocratic family as their holiday retreat, is the largest house and garden in Acequias, and has been renovated to provide four holiday apartments, all of which are decorated in the traditional style of Andalucia.

 

People staying here have the use of the pool, the garden and the many patios in the grounds of the house. The pool is an attractive walled garden and has an ornamental fountain and an area for the use of small children.

 

 

 

 

Houses and apartments are two and three bedroomed and offer a variety of choices for different types of visitor, those with small children might prefer Casa Roma (well away from the pool), the elderly might prefer Casa del Jardin (on the ground floor), whereas those with a hankering for panoramic views might prefer Casa Mirador. Acequias is only a short drive through beautiful and dramatic countryside from the motorway which links Granada to the coast of Motril (both only 25 minutes drive away), 35 minutes drive from Granada airport and 1 hour 35 minutes drive from Malaga airport.

 

 

Acequias is for you if you are looking for the real Spain – dramatic scenery, delicious tapas, and friendly people. The Alhambra at Granada is easy to reach (30 minutes by car) and the beautiful villages and valleys of the Alpujarras are just 30 minutes drive to the east. This is where you will want to buy your Serrano ham and local honey – and drink some of the strongest wine in Spain!

Casa Roma in Tia Maria

We stayed in 2008 and enjoyed the comfortable modern house with a “homely feel” with bits of the owners pictures and painting around.

The kitchen was big enough to eat in and we made good use of the washing machine.

We bought fresh bread from the bread vans, and other supplies from the nearby villages, so a car is needed.

The peaceful location with easy access to the hills for walking, Granada for culture, and the coast for the sea, made it all a relaxing week, just the job for the “getaway from it all” break.

Returning to the garden and pool after a day of sightseeing was a treat, as was relaxing on the terrace with our drinks and books.

Wonderful countryside on the doorstep, recommended to friends, and we will go again.
